Biography

Sam Muller is a PhD candidate at the University Medical Center Utrecht's Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care's subdepartment of Medical Humanities. He has a background in Political Science and Public Administration and Organisational Science, having previously researched innovations and challenges relating to the topics of governance, participation and deliberation. Moreover, he has studied political theory and climate policy.

Sam's doctoral research intersects the social sciences, medical ethics/bioethics and law research. His doctoral research is part of the working package addressing the governance, ethical and legal aspects of the Innovative Medicines Initiative's (IMI) BigData@Heart project. Sam's research focuses primarily on the governance challenges of health data research networks. The central pursuit of his research is to pave the way for organising responsible, legitimate and sustainable governance for health data research by conducting interdisciplinary theoretical analysis and empirical research. In doing so, he addresses the topics of:

  • Critical data and algorithm studies
  • Social licence for morally demanding research
  • Experimentalist, algorithmic and collaborative governance
  • Learning accountability
  • Patient and public involvement and co-creation.
